Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd’s Announce Gemini Cooperation

Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd surprised the maritime industry with the unveiling of a new operational partnership under the name “Gemini Cooperation,” starting in February 2025. This alliance aims to create a flexible and interconnected ocean network with a fleet of 290 vessels and a capacity of 3.4 million containers. Read more about the announcement here.

Surge in Sea Freight Rates Spurs Shift to Rail

The Red Sea crisis has triggered a seismic shift in the logistics landscape, with sea freight rates skyrocketing by 235% month-over-month. Retail businesses are grappling with depleted stock levels and missed deadlines due to ongoing maritime attacks. This turbulence has steered shippers toward considering rail for both Full Container Load (FCL) and Less than Container Load (LCL) shipments. At Forto, we’re witnessing a tangible shift in transportation preferences – rail quotation requests and bookings are surging, signaling an anticipated 300% rise in Q1 2024 volumes for FCL and a 100% increase for LCL, compared to Q4 2023.

In the wake of the current maritime disruptions, rail freight emerges as a viable alternative for smaller-volume shipments and a reliable option for early 2024 plans. However, its capacity to respond immediately to crises is constrained by its structural and market limitations. Planning ahead and staying flexible are key to ensuring shippers and cargo owners can take advantage of rail freight opportunities.

Forto’s Comprehensive Rail Freight Services

At Forto, we offer a wide array of rail services connecting major European Points of Delivery (PODs). Our end-to-end control in China, Poland, and Germany ensures meticulous care of shipments. Our services span both FCL and LCL options, featuring express services with a transit time of 12 days from China to Duisburg and Hamburg and regular speed trains averaging 18 to 20 days.

Conclusion

The shipping industry is adjusting to the Red Sea crisis and changing market dynamics, with rail freight emerging as a significant alternative. Forto’s rail services provide a reliable option in these challenging times. The formation of the Gemini Cooperation by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd is an important development that we will closely monitor in the future.
