In our latest Insider interview, we sat down and chatted with Moritz Dassing, Key Account Executive for FreightHub’s growing business. Moritz started with FreightHub in December 2016 but soon found himself involved in quite a number of activities!
Describe your job responsibilities and a typical day at FreightHub.
I started in December 2016 officially in the sales department but soon afterwards I was asked to support the operations, product and SDR (Sales Development Representative) department due to my experiences. The fact that we are not working and thinking only within our departments enables us to keep the pace high and act flexibly towards our client’s demands.
Currently, I’m creating the “Logistics Academy” together with Jonas Fokkena and Steffen Döring from our Hamburg office as a company internal education program which will act as a tool to further increase our internal knowledge. We’re also creating a lean version of the Logistics Academy for our clients to offer support and inform them about new modes and current changes within the market.
Working at FreightHub challenges the way you think and work which drive you to better performance.
You mentioned your previous experience. What prompted you to move to a startup/digital forwarder?
Due to my previous time with deugro (Deutschland) Projekt GmbH, Hanjin Shipping and the LGI Logistics Group I’m thankful for the experiences that i was able to collect over the years. These experiences enable me to learn more about logistics, sales and business development.
Startups are different compared to classics freight forwarding companies in terms of flexibility and momentum. I really appreciate the fact that you can create and implement a project very fast with more drive due to less hierarchy. In addition, manual processes are less effective and demand high manual. FreightHub has a very good approach in changing those processes. This made me leave my former company in order to support creating this new product because I think this is the way to go.
What attracted you to the freight forwarding/supply chain industry?
I really like the idea of modernisation and transparency due to a digitalized platform.
Current logistics processes demand high manual input and supervision which costs time and is just flexible upto a certain point. FreightHub’s approach is very interesting because the system reduces the workload which a client has on the one hand but also provides all services of a classic freight forwarder. Our tool enable clients to choose departures according to their demands on their own.
Also, you can compare different modes within seconds which is an immense increase in visibility and it’s absolutely timesaving for our clients. So yes, this product idea attracted me very much.
What have you learned from working at FreightHub?
I’ve experienced a different approach towards working and thinking compared to working at traditional freight forwarding companies. The goals are set as high as the motivation of each team member and that’s what I really like. The drive to not only meet but surpass client’s’ requirements and reach milestone is immense and enables us to achieve goals in a very short time.
What advice would you give someone who is interested in working for a startup?
I’d like to encourage everyone to work with a startup because the personal satisfaction and achievement in experience and performance is very high. Due to young companies’ flexibility and hands on mentality, you can gather immense information across all departments and increase your own foundation very quick.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Digitalization and automatisation within the logistics supply chain is the right direction. In fact it’s not stoppable because of such an immense technology development across the entire industry. The time has come and it is also our challenge to convince clients across the supply chain to accept the change and actively use new tools.
Support the overcoming the aversion of new, digital systems and product is also a main task that we face but I’m confident that we can change and at least influence the way logistics is done so.
