The logistics industry is facing mounting pressure to decarbonize. Freight transport accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is projected to become the largest source of emissions by 2050.
We at Forto do not see this as a problem, but a call to action. And we decided to commit to emission targets that truly make a difference for our planet.

Science-based targets for real accountability

Forto’s emissions reduction goals are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and align with the 1.5°C scenario of the Paris Agreement. And we are very happy to report that as of 2024 we are overall on track with reaching these targets.

The targets have been defined as follows:

  • Forto commits to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2021 base year.
  • Forto also commits to reducing absolute well-to-wake scope 3 GHG emissions from subcontracted container shipping operations 35.6% within the same timeframe.
  • Forto finally commits to reducing all other absolute scope 3 emissions 42% within the same timeframe.
  • Forto commits to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a 2021 base year. Forto also commits to reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90% within the same timeframe.

2024: Another year of sustainability at Forto

2024 has been another year shaped by sustainable development at Forto. We replaced our offsetting offer with insetting options, proposing different biofuel blends to our customers and leveraging the impact we can make as a logistics service provider.

Replacing offsetting with insetting

In a move that redefines industry standards, Forto discontinued emission offsetting in April 2024 and replaced it with Insetting Light. This new approach integrates a percentage of alternative fuels – namely second-generation biofuels made from sustainable waste streams – directly into the freight services offered.

Instead of retroactive compensation, Insetting Light reduces emissions at the source across all transport stages. If customers wish to go beyond the 2-5% emission reduction via Insetting Light, they can choose to increase the insetting level to 25%, 50%, or 80%.

The result? Over 3,080 tonnes of CO₂e were saved in 2024 overall through customer shipments using biofuel.

Cleaning rivers, not just the air

Plastic pollution is another frontier we are addressing. Through our partnership with Plastic Fischer, we support cleanup efforts on Indonesia’s highly polluted Citarum River.

In 2024, 14,500 kg of waste were collected and processed on behalf of Forto and our customers.

Office sustainability: Paperless and plant-based

Beyond logistics, Forto applied sustainability to its everyday operations:

  • Oat milk only in office coffee machines
  • Fully vegetarian and vegan catering at events, reducing food-related CO₂e by 47%
  • Saved 2.1 tonnes of CO₂e and 21,700 liters of water through digital contracts
  • Sorted recycling in all offices, with 101.2 tonnes of household waste managed in 2024
  • Phasing out combustion engine and hybrid vehicles, ensuring 100% electric fleet for executives
  • Transitioning to renewable electricity at all offices
